Who Is BRIDGE SHIP HOUSE?

BRIDGE SHIP HOUSE is a Japanese artist who has been drawing for roughly two decades, best known for his signature character: Matthew, a four-eyed rabbit who lives on a hill away from town and quietly keeps to his work. The pop-yet-melancholy world around Matthew has earned the artist collaborations well beyond the gallery scene — including apparel and even a BE@RBRICK collaboration. (If designer toys are your thing, see our guide to hunting the 7-Eleven uniform BE@RBRICK in Japan.)

What "CRACK" Is About

The exhibition's premise is disarmingly simple. Matthew throws pebbles at a wall. Again and again. Small cracks appear, spread — and finally light breaks through the hole.

It's an image of the artist's own practice: solitary, repetitive, stubborn — until something gives. In a country whose art headlines are dominated by teamLab-scale spectacle, "CRACK" is the opposite kind of experience: a small, quiet show where one idea is given room to breathe. Alongside the artworks you'll find new merchandise and apparel, and even a collaboration craft beer brewed with Takamatsu's own OHLOY BREWING — a nice local touch you can literally take home.

Why It Fits a Setouchi Trip Perfectly

  • Takamatsu is the gateway to the Setouchi art islands. If Naoshima, Teshima or the ferry port are on your route, the gallery sits right in the city's central shopping-arcade area — a 5-minute walk from Kotoden's Kawaramachi station.
  • It's free and open late (until 21:00). After a day of island-hopping and sanuki udon, this slots into your evening with zero planning.
  • It's the "real Japan art scene." International visitors see the museums; a working gallery show by a beloved domestic artist is a rarer souvenir.

Practical Tips

FAQ

Is it really free? Yes — admission is free. Merchandise and the collaboration beer are paid.

How long does a visit take? It's an intimate gallery show — 20–40 minutes is typical, longer if you browse the merch.

Is it English-friendly? Signage is primarily Japanese, but the visual storytelling needs no translation, and staff are used to travelers passing through Takamatsu.

I can't make it to Takamatsu. Can I see the artist's work elsewhere? BRIDGE SHIP HOUSE shows regularly with Tokyo galleries and releases collaborations (apparel, figures) online — his official site and X account announce upcoming shows.
