Otaku Glossary

Otaku Glossary 8: Figure Specs

🎯 Learning objective

Recognize and use five common words for figure specifications.

These words come up in Lesson 2: Asking Questions in a Shop.

Meaning: Scale — the size ratio of a figure, e.g. 1/7 scale.

Example:
Kore wa nanbun no ichi sukēru desu ka?
"What scale is this (1/what)?"

Usage: Figures are commonly sold as 1/7, 1/8, 1/4 scale, etc. — a bigger denominator roughly means a smaller figure.

Meaning: Pre-painted, as opposed to an unpainted kit you assemble and paint yourself.

Example:
Tosō-zumi no kansei-hin desu.
"It's a pre-painted, finished product."

Usage: The opposite is ガレージキット/ガレキ (garage kit) — an unpainted kit for hobbyists to build and paint themselves.

可動 (kadō)

Meaning: Articulated / movable — joints that can be posed.

Example:
Kono figyua wa kadō shimasu.
"This figure is poseable."

Usage: The opposite of a fixed-pose figure; important to action-figure collectors who want to pose their figures.

台座 (daiza)

Meaning: Base / stand — the figure's display base.

Example:
Daiza wa fuzoku shite imasu ka?
"Does it come with a base/stand?"

Usage: Worth asking — some figures require a separate base sold apart from the figure itself.

原型 (genkei)

Meaning: Prototype / sculpt — the original master sculpt a figure is based on.

Example:
Genkei wa 〇〇-san ga tantō shimashita.
"The sculpt was done by so-and-so." (〇〇 is a placeholder for a person's name)

Usage: Credited on figure boxes as 原型師 (genkeishi, "sculptor") — the artist who sculpted the prototype.
